GREENWICH — A meeting at a local barbershop led to the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company receiving a new inflatable boat for rescue operations.

The need for a better boat for the fire company became a topic of discussion when Rick Kral, owner of Beacon Point Marine in Cos Cob, and Capt. Frank Napolitano began talking about town services while waiting for haircuts.

“The guys do a lot for the community,” Kral said of the fire company’s volunteers. “I just wanted to help them out.”

So he did.

Kral donated a 10-foot, rigid bottom inflatable boat with a 15-horsepower, Yamaha motor to the fire company.

“The boat is basically brand new,” he said. “It’s in great shape.”

The fire company’s old boat was inadequate in difficult conditions, and the motor was unreliable, according to Kral.

Police Chief James J. Heavey, a former district fire chief, said the donation came at an opportune time.

“Our old boat has no life left in it,” Heavey said in a statement. “It wouldn’t make it through the next season. Rick’s generosity is dearly appreciated.”

Napolitano agreed.

“He called us up and said, `Guess what? I’ve got a boat for you,’ ” Napolitano said. “It’s great for rescue work.”

The fire company will use the new boat for such vital activities as rescues and flood evacuations.

The jurisdiction of the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company — which has 35 active members, an engine and ladder truck, and two utility vehicles — does not include Long Island Sound, but does encompass about 10 square miles on the western side of town. The new boat will prove invaluable for rescue operations on the river, for example, Napolitano said.

“We’ve had occasions when there’s flooding from the Byram River,” he said. “It’s that kind of rescue work that sometimes we get called to do.”

In April 2007, the Byram River caused moderate to severe flooding, and the fire company, which was making “Katrina-style” evacuations, according to Napolitano, needed to call in additional resources because the engine on the old boat gave out.

Kral was even kind enough to donate a trailer to tow the new vessel with, he said.

The boat, which will be kept at the Glenville firehouse, is lightweight for easy transportation, Napolitano said.

“You can carry it, which is great about it,” he said.

Glenville Fire Company was one of all of the fire companies/departments in town (including Stamford Fire Department) to a reported structure fire at 169 Mason Street, an apartment complex. Upon arrival for the fire department, fire was already shooting out the window of an apartment. The apartment where the fire started was on the first floor, smoke was throughout the building to the 4th floor. Investigation shows that cooking may have played a part in the cause of the fire.
